Best way to clean HOB filters?

HI all, it's getting that time, where I think I need to do a good cleaning on my filters. I usually clean my media (in tank water) about every 1-2 months. But this time I was thinking about doing the "big" cleaning, as in take the filters off and clean them.

First off, is this necessary, or is cleaning the filter media, and replacing it when it is falling apart good enough? As far as I can tell, the flow from my filters (I have 5 total filters on 3 tanks) is still strong.

And second, if I do need to do a huge cleaning, how should I go about it?

I always clean my whole filter when I do. It won't hurt anything if your tank has been running awhile. I take the media and Clean it in a bucket of tank water.the rest I take to the sink and completely clean. Just use warm water a old algae pad and some of those pipe cleaners they sell for cleaning filters. Make sure you clean the impeller as best u can.

I use q-tips or paper towel wrapped chop sticks to clean the intake tubes

I remove the entire filter housing including media. I remove the media and rinse off in used tank water. I put the filter housing in the sink or tub and rinse off with hot tap water. I remove the impeller and use a wire brush to clean it out under hot tap water. I also use the wire brush to clean out the intake tubes.

Put the whole thing back together and voila, a well maintained filter that provides optimum filtration to your tank.

I do this about once every 2 weeks.

What about all of the detritus that escapes the filter when it gets turned off? Is there a way to stop that from being so bad?

By rinsing out your filter housing. If you keep the housing clean, you won't get that.

I have aqua clear but I have also had marinland and iv never had that problem. where is it coming from? out the tube that goes into the tank? iv never really noticed anything coming out of mine when I turn it off.

I've never turned off my marineland biowheels so I'm not sure if will or not, but other filters I have had have done this, so we will see.

Oh, if that's the case, you're picking up gunk from the filter housing when you turn the filter off. By turning it off, there's no current (per se) and the detritus can now float to the top and enter the tank due to the biowheel still running.

Wait a minute, how can you turn the filter off but keep the biowheels running?

No, I've never turned off my biowheels and cleaned them. They have been running from the beginning. But I've had other filters do this (the detritus comes out of the intake).

Sorry for the confusion.

yea never clean the bio wheels, you know that but just in case of any confusion.

you could hold your gravel vac by the filter intake when you turn it off. that way just in case stuff comes out your ready to suck it up. I don't remember my marineland doing that though so hopefully it wont.
